England vs Windies, 1st Test - Day 1

Joe Root, leading England for the first time in front of his home crowd, won the toss and elected to bat. Chris Woakes returned to the side, while Windies made two changes to their team

Windies began well dismissing the top order cheaply. The new ball bowlers Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel bowled with a lot of discipline and didn't give away easy runs in the morning session.

Poor catching by the Windies remained a feature of the day. The first to survive because of the visitors' generosity was Joe Root when he was batting on 8

Joe Root took complete advantage of the dropped chance and went on to register yet another half century - his 12th in as many matches, equalling AB de Villiers's world record.

Within a few overs after Lunch England lost their fourth wicket, yet another below-par show by their top order

Ben Stokes, like Joe Root, was dropped early on in the innings - when he was batting on seven. He was dropped again while batting on 98, and got a lucky call in between. Nonetheless, he survived all of that and went on to stroke a century - his 6th in Tests.

Unlike Ben Stokes, who survived a close appeal, Jonny Bairstow wasn't too happy when a close call went against him.

England were eventually bowled out for 258 with Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach bagging four wickets each

James Anderson dismissed Kieran Powell late in the day as the opener looked to go for an unnecessary drive. Alistair Cook took his 150th Test catch
